Marvel have announced that their next two summer blockbusters Thor and Captain America are going to be 3D. Unfortunately it’s going to be that post-production 3D conversion that worked oh-so-well for Alice in Wonderland and Clash of the Titans. Captain America director Joe Johnston actually tried shooting with a 3D rig, but found it unwieldy and restrictive.

In addition to this announcement Marvel also released a new image from Thor, featuring Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tom Hiddleston as Loki. Thor’s hammer Mjolnir can also be glimpsed in the background. Odin’s eye-patch is a bit unsettling but the image is still rather cool.

Why do they persist on 3D in live action films? It’s useless. Just makes us have to pay an extra 3 euro for a hammer coming out of the screen.

But, Hopkins does look cool. I’ll give him that.

Hopkins is great – but do you remember when apparently Brian Blessed had the role? Now there’s a man who could have sired the god of thunder.

And yes, sired is weird to use as a verb in a modern context, but if anyone can sire, it’s Brian Blessed.

@Ronan I fear that Hopkins is a little like a lost character from the Discworld adaptations (and not in a good way).

@Darren Brian Blessed is awesome. Totally wrong for the movie but awesome nonetheless. Brian Cox would have been a good choice too.

@Darren Brian Blessed? I don’t know how much faith I have left in him after those terrible England World Cup videos. Blackadder I is still awesome though.
