The Man Who Killed Don Quixote – McGregor joins Duvall

Empire has just announced some exciting news. Ewan McGregor has signed on to replace Johnny Depp in Terry Gillam’s adaptation of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

Depp was originally due to play a modern-day advertising exec, who travels back in time to 17th century Spain and bumps into Don Quixote. That was in Gillam’s first attempt at filming the saga, which was such a disaster that the documentary chronicling the tale, Lost in La Mancha, was all that emerged.

Robert Duvall is replacing Jean Rochefort as Don Quixote himself. Rochefort famously became unable to ride a horse following a herniated disc which delayed shooting and ultimately sealed the movies doom. Gillam has raised $20 million for this trip to classical Spain so let’s hope it turns out better than the last one.

I’m a huge Don Quixote fan so I’ll be awaiting this with bated breath.
