#ArTeilifis: Auditions extended for new series of hit TG4 show Ros na Rún

Such was the interest in auditions for actors wanting to join the cast of Ros na Run, TG4’s Irish language drama that more auditions will be held at the end of April.

Candidates who demonstrate the most flair and natural acting ability will be shortlisted and have the opportunity to return to the set and join the cast of Ros na Rún for series 24, which begins filming in August of this year.

I am extremely happy with the standard she has seen already. The April auditions are being held to meet the demand of candidates who may have been disappointed when they didn’t get the opportunity to attend the March ones.

Each season introduces a few new characters and this year producers are on the look out specifically for a woman in her 40s, a woman in her 50’s/60’s and a young man in his mid-twenties. That said, actors from all age groups are welcomed. Of course as well as an acting flair, candidates are expected to have Irish.

We have been fortunate over the years to have found cast members among local amateur groups in Gaeltacht communities. Indeed, many of these have adapted so naturally to their characters and been so popular with viewers that their roles have been expanded.

Auditions are also used to trawl for new talent and indeed have at times created new characters after coming across budding actors with that X factor.

The series is set in a fictional village called Ros Na Rún, based in An Spidéal, Co. Galway and is the single largest independent production commissioned in the history of Irish broadcasting.

The team behind Ros na Rún consists of 150 made up of crew, directors, writers and actors as well as about 80 extras a week. Filming takes place on a purpose built set in An Spidéal over a six month period and though its regular viewers — about 150,000 tune in to the soap’s twice weekly broadcasts on Tuesday and Thursday with a subtitled omnibus on Sundays, it is also viewed on the TG4 player all over the world, mostly in the UK, USA and Australia but also in pockets on mainland Europe and even in Hanoí to name but one international city. The soap’s appeal is down to its rural setting and its ability to tackle social issues with a dash of humour.
