Upcoming Irish Cinema: Cavalry begins shooting

Principal photography has begun on Irish director John Michael McDonagh’s Calvary, his second film after the hugely 2011 feature The Guard. Shooting has begun in Sligo with McDonagh pleased to be able to shoot on location, stating:

“It is with great excitement, bordering on tumescence, that I am looking forward to collaborating once more with Ireland’s greatest actor, Brendan Gleeson, and working with the finest ensemble cast ever assembled in the history of Irish cinema. I would like to thank the Irish Film Board, and the BFI, for their continuing support for filmmaking that seeks to escape from the tiresome, rarefied confines of Dublin 4. Up the West!”

Cavalry sees McDonagh teaming up again with his The Guard star Brendan Gleeson as a man of the cloth who has fallen out of favour with his flock. The film also features a host of great Irish talent with Chris O’Dowd, Aidan Gillen, Brendan’s son Domhnall Gleeson,  Dylan Moran, David Wilmot and Pat Shortt joining international names such as Kelly Reilly, Marie Josée Crozé, and Isaach De Bankolé.

With brother Martin bringing us Seven Psychopaths on December 7th the next year is lucking good for Irish film and the brothers McDonagh. Cavalry will hit cinema screens late 2013.
