If someone would have said to me about 6 or 7 years ago that Ben Affleck would become one of the most interesting and potentially brilliant film directors of the late noughties I would have laughed. But not anymore as Gone Baby Gone proved that Affleck had want it takes to make an extraordinarily powerful and moving film.
So can lightning strike twice or will Ben fall foul of the second movie syndrome that hit fellow luminaries like Richard Kelly and to a lesser extent Rian Johnson? Early indications are positive with The Town looking really rather good.
And here’s a really rather good looking poster to go with it, setting a dark and dangerous looking scene that perfectly matches the plot. Affleck stars as Doug MacRay, a Boston thief, who kidnaps bank manager Claire Keesey (played by Rebecca Hall) and ends up falling for her. Before he can reform his ways though there’s the small matter of FBI Agent Adam Frawley (Jon Hamm) which must be addressed.
The Town is out September 24th. Thanks to Empire for the heads up.
