Tamara Drewe – New poster and trailer

Tamara Drewe is an intriguing looking prospect. On the face of it there’s the impossibly attractive but ordinarily boring Gemma Arterton (see Prince of Persia and Clash of the Titans) traipsing her way around the English countryside, bringing rumour, scandal and an air of haughtiness in her wake. Not really that appealing then…

But wait there’s something here…despite it’s typical rom-com setting and style, it actually looks rather funny. Plus it’s based on a weekly comic strip which itself is based on Thomas Hardy’s Far From the Madding Crowd. Just the thought of that has to be worth admission.

The movie sees Arterton, a journalist in London, return to her country roots after the death of her mother. Here she encounters old boyfriends, lost chances and a simplier way of life.

Director Stephen Frears has given us a quite brilliant unconvential rom-com before in the shape of High Fidelity, so there’s hope for this. Arterton too has branched out from being the cinematic equivalent of a painting with a gritty performance in The Disappearance of Alice Creed. Then there’s the support cast which includes Luke Evans, Roger Allam, Dominic Cooper, Tamsin Grieg, Jessica Barden and Bill Camp. All terribly British, but all terribly good too.

The movie is out September 10th and here’s a new poster and the trailer for your viewing pleasure.
