Sofia Coppola is a very talented director, having given us The Virgin Suicides and staggering Lost in Translation. It’s also been 4 years since she gave us that Marie Antoinette abomination, so we’re willing to let her amaze us once again.
A new trailer for her current project Somewhere has just been released. Thematically it’s the spiritual successor to Lost In Translation, with Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning instead of Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson.
The story’s completely different of course, focusing as it does on Dorff’s out of control Hollywood superstar, who is much happier bedding ladies and throwing wild parties than facing the realities of the world. When his 11 year-old daughter shows up on his doorstep this mad-cap world comes crashing down as he realises he may have to be responsible for this little girl.
Coppola’s trailer is small on dialogue but big on dramatic overtones and the musical flair for which she has become famous. I have my doubts about Dorff, he’s never really been much good in anything, but Coppola has a gift so I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt.
Somewhere is due out in Irish cinemas March 2011.
