The 2014 Irish Film and Television Award Nominees are in!

The Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) has announced the nominees for the 11th Annual Irish Film and Television Awards. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, 5th April 2014 at Dublin’s DoubleTree by Hilton Burlington Road, and will be broadcast live on RTÉ One at 9.35pm.

On the film front John Michael McDonagh’s Calvary and John Butler’s The Stag, which opened and closed this month’s Jameson Dublin International Film Festival respectively, lead the pack with 6 nominations each. Both films picked up Best Film, Director, Script, Actor in a Lead Role, and Actress in a Lead Role. Calvary‘s sixth nomination came for Orla O’Rourke as Supporting Actress, while The Stag‘s came for Peter McDonald as Supporting Actor. Byzantium, The Sea, and Run & Jump picked up 4 nominations each.

The 4 nominees in the International Film category represent a subset of the Best Picture Academy Award contenders, with 12 Years a Slave, Gravity, Philomena, and The Wolf of Wall Street nominated. The International Actor and Actress categories are similarly well populated with Oscar nominees, with only Michael Douglas’ turn as Liberace in Behind the Candelabra as an exception. That film aired on TV in the US and was not eligible for Oscar.
