Awards Season: Boyhood leads winners at 72nd Golden Globes

Last night the Hollywood Foreign Press Association held their 72nd Golden Globe awards ceremony. Traditionally a big night in Hollywood the stars showed up in force decked out in their finery and sporting messages of support for victims of the recent Charlie Hebdo attack in France.

In the past the HFPA have been criticised for some of their eccentric choices, but this year there were largely no surprises in the major categories. Oscar favourite Boyhood, Richard Linklater’s 12 years in the making drama following the growth of a young boy into adulthood, won three awards, Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette.

In a welcome surprise Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel beat out Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, with the latter having to settle for a Best Screenplay. Michael Keaton also picked up the Best Actor – Comedy or Drama for his leading role in Birdman.

Eddie Redmayne’s performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything beat out fellow countryman Benedict Cumberbatch to scoop Best Actor – Drama, with odds-on favourite Julianne Moore winning the Actress category for her role in Still Alice. The Theory of Everything also won Best Score for Johann Johannsson. Adam Adam’s picked up Best Actress- Comedy or Musical for Tim Burton’s Big Eyes, while J.K. Simmons deservedly won Best Supporting actor for Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash.

Another surprise on the night was How to Train Your Dragon 2 beating out the heavily favoured The Lego Movie for best Animated Feature. The pair are likely to go head-to-head again at the Oscars, with Ireland hopeful that Tomm Moore’s Song of the Sea can cause a similar upset in that category. Russia’s Oscar entry Leviathan won Best Foreign Language film.

Early favourite Selma, which entered with four nominations, picked up a solitary reward for Best Original Song, after being snubbed for BAFTA in its nominations earlier this week. Morten Tyldum‘s The Imitation Game suffered a heavier defeat winning none of its 5 nominations.

In the TV categories US cable and on-demand services beat out the networks, with Amazon’s Transparent a big winner, alongside Netflix’s House of Cards and Showtime’s The Affair. FX’s Fargo also picked up two Mini-series awards, including Best Actor for Billy-Bob Thornton.
