Full-length trailer for Snyder’s Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch is going to divide audiences, with it’s highly stylistic dream setting counterpointing its super-real 1950’s mental asylum basis. It’s also probably going to be brilliant. It’s dreamworld, which is dramatically different from the land inhabited in Christopher Nolan’s Inception, is a fantasy fuelled vision of life without boundaries and imagination run amok. Just check out the brand new full-length trailer to see what I’m talking about.

The trailer makes this film look fantastic, and as evidenced by director Zack Snyder’s body of work to date (300, Watchmen, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole) that will hold true for movie too. This movie is Snyder’s second foray into 3D, and the first to feature real actors. There’s a fairly widespread criticism of Snyder that story is sacrificed to the alter of cool visuals, but Watchmen proved that he could handle style and substance, and this is looking good on the story front too.

The movie sees a young girl, played by Ellie Browning, locked up in an asylum and deciding to break free with the assistance of a group of other head-strong young women. This the try to achieve via the avenue of their imaginations. A strong cast includes Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Abbie Cornish, Oscar Isaac, Carla Gugino, and Jon Hamm, in addition to Browing.

Sucker Punch hits screens March 25th, 2011.

Synopsis:

Sucker Punch is an epic action fantasy that takes us into the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality.  Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between what’s real and what is imaginary.

She has been locked away against her will, but Babydoll (Emily Browning) has not lost her will to survive.  Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four other young girls—the outspoken Rocket (Jena Malone), the street-smart Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), the fiercely loyal Amber (Jamie Chung) and the reluctant Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish)—to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino) and the High Roller (Jon Hamm).

Led by Babydoll, the girls engage in fantastical warfare against everything from samurais to serpents, with a virtual arsenal at their disposal.  Together, they must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stay alive.  But with the help of a Wise Man (Scott Glenn), their unbelievable journey—if they succeed—will set them free.
