Artemis Fowl

Disney to bring Artemis Fowl to the big screen

Walt Disney Pictures and The Weinstein Company are teaming up to bring Artemis Fowl, the series of eight science fiction fantasy novels written by author Eoin Colfer, to the big screen. This is fantastic news for the Irish author and for fans of the series.

Artemis Fowl is the story of a 12-year-old millionaire, genius, criminal mastermind. who kidnaps a fairy (Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit) to harness her magic to save his family. But these aren’t the fairies of the bedtime stories  – they’re dangerous!

There’s been false dawns before for the film with Miramax purchasing the film rights in 2001, but since the initial script by Colfer was finalised in 2003 not much has happened. Whether or not Colfer will help on the script is unclear as the screenplay is being written by Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix writer Michael Goldenberg.  Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal will executive produce the film.

Artemis Fowl has long had the potential to be the next Harry Potter so it’s great to see that there is some movement on the film adaptation. Hopefully it will not be too long before he graces the big screen.

“With its balance of mystery, adventure and family appeal, Artemis Fowl is a natural fit for Disney. We’re looking forward to collaborating with Harvey on this exciting project.”
Sean Bailey, president, Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production.

“I feel as though everything is coming full circle considering Bob De Niro and Jane Rosenthal brought me this book while I was still at Miramax and within hours I told them I wanted the rights to the film. This is a special project for me because my children absolutely love this book. This story is for everyone and there is no one better than Disney to make a film that will excite people young and old.”
Harvey Weinstein, Co-Chairman of The Weinstein Company
