BAFTA Film Awards

2011 BAFTA winners announced

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards, a.k.a. the BAFTAs were held tonight in London. The awards offered up little by way of surprises with The King’s Speech winning heavily as expected. One slight surprise however was the awarding of Best Director to David Fincher for his work on The Social Network, rather than the expected win for The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper.

Three of the acting awards went to The King’s Speech, with Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter picking up Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively, while the other, for Best Actress went to favourite Natalie Portman for Black Swan.

Sir Christopher Lee was awarded a Fellowship of the Academy, a kind of lifetime acheivement award, and was gracious, humble and rather funny in his acceptance, which was greeted with a rousing standing ovation.
