Nominations for the César Awards, the French version of the Oscars, have been announced this morning in Paris. Of particular note is the inclusion of the Irish animated feature Song of the Sea as one of the 3 contenders for Best Animated Film.
The Tomm Moore directed, Cartoon Saloon produced, Song of the Sea qualifies by virtue of being a French co-production and having already been released in cinemas there. Song of the Sea has already received a Best Animated Feature nomination at this year’s Oscars, as well as 7 nominations at the Annies.
The Bertrand Bonello directed Saint Laurent, France’s entry for the Foreign Language Oscar, received 10 nominations, ahead of Thomas Cailley’s Les Combattants with nine, French-Mauritanian Oscar nominee Timbuktu with eight, and Jalil Lespert’s Yves Saint Laurent with 7.
Best Actress Oscar nominee Marion Cotillard received a nomination for the the Dardenne’s Two Days, One Night, with Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart nominated for Olivier Assayas’ Sils Maria.
The Best Foreign Film category has Oscar nominees, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Ida, as well as 12 Years A Slave, Two Days, One Night, and Mommy.
The 40th annual awards will be held on February 20th, just two days ahead of the Oscars, at Paris’ Chatelet Theatre.
