Love & Friendship

#Awards: Irish films feature heavily in London Film Critics’ Circle nominations

The London Film Critics’ Circle have just announced the nominees for their annual awards, with Irish film to the fore in the nominations. Leading the pack is Irish co-production Love & Friendship, which scored 7 nominations, tying with critical darling and Oscar front-runner Moonlight.

Love & Friendship scored a double Best Film nomination, earning a spot in the British/Irish Film of the Year and the overall Film of the Year list. It will compete for the British/Irish title against John Carney’s Sing Street, and British films American Honey, High-Rise (which is a Northern Ireland co-production), and I, Daniel Blake. Kate Beckinsale also earned a double nomination for her lead performance in the Blinder Films’ production. She will compete against Ruth Negga for Best British/Irish Actress, after the Limerick-local was nominated for Loving and Iona.

Sing Street also earned nominations for Gary Clark and John Carney’s music in the Technical Achievement category, and for lead actor Ferdia Walsh-Peelo in the Young British/Irish Performer of the Year category.

Also in the Technical category DOP Robbie Ryan has been nominated for his cinematography on Andrea Arnold’s American Honey. While in the British/Irish Short Film of the Year category Natasha Waugh’s superb abortion-themed short Terminal in one of the five nominees.

The winners will be announced on January 22, 2017 at the London Film Critics’ Circle’s annual awards ceremony at the May Fair Hotel in central London, which will be hosted by filmmakers Alice Lowe and Steve Oram.
