#IrishFilm: World Premiere of Kino Hospital at Triskel Christchurch Cinema January 18th

Director Jann Clavadetscher is in Cork on Thursday 18 January as a special guest at Triskel Christchurch for the world premiere of his new film Kino Hospital. Clavadetscher will take part in a Q&A after the screening. Kino Hospital is a radical meltdown of a sci-fi thriller about a handful of scientists who get scattered around the globe after a failed experiment in the laboratories of the Kino Hospital.

Jann Clavadetscher is a Swiss-Irish filmmaker. He became a member of Experimental Film Society in 2005 and is currently living and working in Dublin. His practice includes installation, performance, short film and feature film projects all conceived within the context of an idea of cinema. Over the past decade, Clavadetscher has created a mysterious alter ego character to inhabit this work. This figure is an explorer, a combination of location scout and cinema usher inspired by the iconic figures of silent film comedy. He appears and disappears in Clavadetscher’s films and moves through his expanded cinema installations. Clavadetscher works with a variety of formats from 35mm to CCTV camera footage and from pocket beamers to hand cranked film projectors.

The Kino Hospital screening is presented by Phantoscope, Triskel’s quarterly experimental cinema event. This visually dazzling meltdown of a sci-fi thriller is the latest assault on narrative, genre and the sensorium to emerge from the notorious Dublin-based Experimental Film Society production company. It explores the consequences of a handful of scientists getting scattered around the globe after a failed experiment in the laboratories of the Kino Hospital. They are forced to continue their work but their return seems highly unlikely. While the evil Dr. Baron Von Mertzbach enjoys his peace, the neglected, dissatisfied and deranged audience seeks revenge.

Experimental Film Society (EFS) is an Irish company dedicated to the production and screening of experimental cinema. It concentrates on nurturing film projects which reflect the radical cinematic vision that it has developed over its eighteen year existence.

Blood Simple

Also screening on 18 January is Joel and Ethan Coen’s thrilling debut feature ‘Blood Simple.’ The 1984 American crime film is a stylish, imaginative and hard-boiled neo noir which marked their arrival as important and distinctive new cinematic voices on its release three decades ago. This 2K DCP restoration was overseen by the Coens and the film’s cinematographer, Barry Sonnenfeld.
