The Final Year

#IFI: Former US Ambassador to UN Samantha Power @ The Final Year Jan 19th

Former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power will attend a special screening of Greg Barker’s new documentary The Final Year on Friday, January 19th at 18.20, followed by a Q&A. Power, described by Forbes as ‘a powerful crusader for U.S foreign policy as well as human rights and democracy’,has also been named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People and one of Foreign Policy’s Top 100 Global Thinkers.

The Final Year, which opens at the IFI on January 19th, was filmed during 2016, when documentary filmmaker Greg Barker was granted access to key members of outgoing US President Barack Obama’s administration: Secretary of State John Kerry, speechwriter Ben Rhodes, National Security Advisor Susan E. Rice, and Ambassador Power.

Barker was permitted a 90-day shoot that culminated in the hours before Donald Trump’s inauguration and, in that period, he followed his subjects to no less than twenty-one countries, capturing events such as the Syrian peace negotiations, the implementation of the Iran nuclear agreement, and Obama’s historic speech at Hiroshima. Samantha Power’s trip to Africa in the aftermath of Boko Haram’s abduction of hundreds of schoolgirls and her tearful speech to a group of US immigrants are especially memorable sequences in a surprisingly moving film.

Tickets for the screening of The Final Year + Q&A are €12 and are now on sale from www.ifi.ie and the IFI Box Office – 01-6793477. Tickets for all other screenings go on sale Monday, January 15th.
