#Event: Galway Film Centre & BAI host Screenplay Case Study: A Date for Mad Mary on March 8th

Galway Film Centre will host Screenplay Case Study: A Date for Mad Mary in association with the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland / An hÚdarás Craolacháin na hÉireann, on Wednesday, March 8th at The G Hotel, Galway.

This talk will explore the writing and development process behind award-winning Irish film, A Date for Mad Mary. Colin Thornton (Writer) and Darren Thornton (Writer/Director) will be interviewed by Christian O’Reilly (Writer) about the script and how that translated onto the screen. The event is aimed at writers, producers and directors.

A Date for Mad Mary began its life as a one-woman stage show, written & performed by Yasmine Akram and directed by Darren Thornton of Calipo Theatre Company. The film shared the award for Best Irish Film at Galway Film Fleadh 2016 and its lead actor, Seana Kerslake (Can’t Cope, Won’t Cope) won the Rising Star Award. It was shot over 28 days in Dublin and Drogheda in November 2014 and is the first feature film from writer/director Darren Thornton.

The talk will examine:

  • The adaptation from play to screenplay
  • The co-writing process
  • The development process
  • An analysis of the screenplay and use of story tools

The film is available to watch online via Volta, but it will also be screened prior to the talk on March 8th from 9.30am. Also, participants will be emailed a copy of the screenplay in advance. The event takes place at The G Hotel and will be followed by a Networking Lunch.

The film was an Element Pictures production, in association with the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, Bord Scannán na hÉireann/The Irish Film Board and TV3 with the support of the MEDIA Programme of the European Union.
