The Irish Film Institute (IFI) will present one of the year’s most anticipated films, Todd Phillips’s Joker, in 70mm, daily from Friday, October 4th. The Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures and BRON Creative film, which received an eight-minute standing ovation at its recent Venice Film Festival world premiere and the festival’s top prize, the Golden Lion, stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz and Frances Conroy.
Joker is Phillips’s original vision of the infamous DC villain, an origin story infused with, but distinctly outside, the character’s more traditional mythologies. Joaquin Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck, a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. Longing for any light to shine on him, he tries his hand as a stand-up comic, but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty and, ultimately, betrayal, Arthur makes one bad decision after another that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty, allegorical character study.
Joker in 70mm will screen daily from Friday, October 4th. Tickets go on sale on the IFI website from Friday.
