2001: A Space Odyssey

#AtCinemas: 70mm is back with a bang at the IFI this summer

Following last year’s record-breaking run of Christopher Nolan’s epic Dunkirk, the Irish Film Institute, Ireland’s only 70mm cinema, is bringing back two classics in this glorious format for Ireland’s ultimate cinema experience.

Screening from August 10th, Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey will return in the format on which it was originally filmed and meant to be seen. Screening on a new print from the ‘unrestored’ version overseen by Christopher Nolan which premièred at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, this iconic sci-fi masterpiece covers the entire history of man, positing what might be the next evolutionary leap for our species.

Famous for its inspired use of classical music, astonishing special effects, and overwhelming sense of awe and wonder, watching 2001: A Space Odyssey on 70mm is an experience every film fan should have at least once.

Also screening in 70mm this summer is James Cameron’s Aliens; the film will screen as part of the IFI’s Dark Skies season on Saturday, July 21st.

Ditching the slow burn tension and ‘stalk and slash’ horror dynamics of Ridley Scott’s Alien in favour of a full-blown shock and awe assault on the senses, Cameron’s film is one of the most relentlessly thrilling action movies ever made. Sigourney Weaver was Oscar-nominated for her reprisal of the iconic Ripley character, accompanying a gung-ho military mission to investigate the fate of colonists where she and her late crew first encountered the hostile xenomorph.

70mm provides a unique viewing experience, with up to three times the screen resolution of a standard 4k digital file, and clear and pristine sound.

In addition to the re-releases of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Aliens, the IFI will also screen The Sound of Music in 70mm for a limited engagement from Friday, June 15th.

Tickets for these 70mm screenings are now on sale from the IFI Box Office on 01-6793477 and www.ifi.ie. Tickets costs €14/€13 (concession).

The IFI acknowledges the financial support of the Arts Council. 70mm screenings at the IFI are presented with the support of Expert Air.
