Irish Film Event: Galway Film Fleadh announces opening and closing films

The Galway Film Fleadh, which takes place from Tuesday, 8th July until Sunday, 13th July, has announced that it will open with musical romantic-comedy, Begin Again, directed by John Carney (Once, Zonad). The festival will close with the highly anticipated contemporary thriller, An Bronntanas, directed by Tom Collins (Kings).

Featuring music from Glen Hansard, Begin Again, starring Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, Hailee Steinfield, Adam Levine and James Corden, is a romantic comedy devoted to the beauty of music and the power of chance encounters. Set to the soundtrack of a summer in the city that never sleeps, New York, the film centres around Gretta (Keira Knightley) who loses her long term boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) to the trappings of new found musical fame. Devastated, Gretta throws herself into song writing until a chance encounter with Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced record-label exec, suddenly changes her luck.

An Bronntanas (The Gift) is a contemporary thriller set against the background of a local independent lifeboat crew working off the coast of Connemara. With a cast that includes John Finn (Cold Case, Catch Me If You Can), Owen McDonnell, Michelle Beamish, Charlotte Bradley and Darragh Devaney, An Bronntanas is a film not to be missed at this year’s Fleadh. In the film, the rescue crew receives a distress call on a stormy night to discover a fishing boat with some very interesting cargo, which leaves the crew with a life changing moral dilemma. An Bronntanas is the first ‘Celtic Noir’ thriller of its kind as Gaeilge.

Begin Again will take place on Tuesday, 8th July at 7:30 pm at the Town Hall Theatre, while An Bronntanas will take place on Sunday, 13th July at 8pm also at the Town Hall.
