Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund (ILBF) has announced its latest funding decisions for 2017. Funding was awarded across a wide genre of TV and online content with a total of 17 projects receiving funding, including a new documentary under the new Amharc scheme.
The aims of the ILBF are to promote the production and broadcast of quality Irish language content for an audience in Northern Ireland and beyond and to help grow the Irish language production sector in Northern Ireland.
Big Mountain Productions has been awarded funding for Croí Uladh le John Toal on BBC, a series where John Toal visits the people and places of the many communities that make Ulster special.
Imagine Media was awarded funding for Ceol Chogadh na Saoirse, a music series for TG4 that takes the audience through a musical journey of the War of Independence. Imagine Media also received funding for The Queen’s Pardon, which tells the remarkable true story of two men, Martin Monaghan and Brian Lacey, the former a prison escapee, the latter an historian who was an unwitting aid and ultimately a victim in the escape and of how they ended up becoming friends.
Macha Media’s Paul Henry – Portráid Éireannach, for TG4, investigates how the artist Paul Henry, a Belfast Baptist, came to create a quintessential image of the west of Ireland. Macha Media has also been awarded funding to produce An Bap – an tArán a Chruthaigh Béal Feirste, for BBC NI which will take a look at the story of Belfast’s local delicacy that is the Belfast Bap.
Agricultural shows are proving to be more popular than ever and Crawford McCann Limited has been awarded funding to produce An Taobh Torthúil, for TG4, a series that gets to the heart of the excitement and tension that make up these same shows throughout the country.
Below the Radar’s discussion series An Focal Scoir returns to the BBC for a second series, providing in-depth debate and analysis of various stimulating and controversial issues.
Also back for a second series on BBC is Sonas Productions’ Trad ar Fad which this series will showcase the very best of Irish and Scottish musicians from the Celtic Connections festival.
And returning for a second series to TG4 is Waddell Media’s Turas Bóthair, a series which will take a fly-on-the-wall look at the daily drives of various car loads of humorous, opinionated commuters, all with their own stories to be told.
#Faduda, Paper Owl Films’ platform for exciting online content is also set to continue. Content for young people written by young people giving them a platform to find their own voice near and far in the Irish Language.
Other online content supported includes Rua Media who have being awarded funding to produce more short form content on NÓS.ie while Dearcán Media has been given funding to produce a series of short documentaries on today’s most prominent young Irish Language speakers.
Raidió Fáilte has secured funding for its broadcast training scheme, a scheme which offers a strong foundation for those who wish to work in the media sector in general and provides an opportunity for them to add to their range of experience in the production sector.
DoubleBand Films has received funding under the Amharc scheme to investigate the life and work of David Hammond, broadcaster, folk-singer, artist and film-maker. Amharc was designed to support the production of landmark creative films on the arts in Northern Ireland today and is supported by BBC Gaeilge and TG4.
