#Festival: 22nd Junior Galway Film Fleadh announces Workshops

The Junior Galway Film Fleadh has announced an exciting, engaging and entertaining programme of workshops for Galway’s young cinephiles and budding movie moguls, which will be held on Saturday November 12th.

These Workshops will help young people explore various elements of filmmaking including Special FX, Screenwriting and Storyboarding) as well as introduce them to emerging formats such as Mobile Phone Filmmaking and an Introduction to VR Film. 

Special FX Make-Up for the Movies with Iwona Marciniak will teach kids popular SFX makeup tricks used in film and TV. Participants will learn to create a zombie look, scars, open wounds, blood, bruises and cuts while working in small groups in a fun atmosphere. For those budding young writers out there they have Screenwriting Basics with Shane Perez. Shane is a tutor on MA in Screenwriting Huston Film School, NUIG and this workshop will give writers an overview of just what it takes to develop a potential idea into a viable and entertaining screen story. Topics covered include: Idea generation & development, Elements of a scene, Proper screenplay format and Screenplay structure. 

The Junior Film Fleadh will present a Storyboarding Workshop with Damian O’Connor of the celebrated Brown Bag Animation, creators of Doc McStuffins, Octonauts and Henry Hugglemonster.

Damian will teach participants (Aged between 10-12) the purpose of storyboards and animatics, using a sequence from the world-renowned Doc McStuffins (rough board, final board, animatic and how the animatic translates onto screen) as well as how to start your own board (wide, med, close up)  and group exercises using Humpty Dumpty. 

Making Films on Your Mobile with Cormac Cahill meanwhile will teach young people the basics of mobile phone filmmaking. Exploring the techniques and apps that can be used to capture, edit and export a final project, participants will learn everything they need to get started with Mobile Filmmaking and turn their phone into a mobile film studio.

Finally, Introduction to VR Filming with Paula Kehoe will introduce young people to the potential of Virtual Reality filmmaking.With sales of virtual-reality gear set to take off this year, we are on the cusp of a new media revolution. The New York Times shipped more than a million Google Cardboard viewers to subscribers; YouTube and Facebook already hosts 360-degree videos; and both PlayStation and Xbox have new VR Consoles coming out. Using state-of-the-art Gear VR headsets, this introductory class will explore the coming world of VR filmmaking with a showcase of exciting titles and an in-depth look at the filmmaking process of We are Galway 2020, a VR film by Paula Kehoe.
