Film Mayo - David Keating Course

#Education: Free Screenwriting Workshop in Mayo with David Keating on October 5th

Film Mayo will run a one-day screenwriting workshop with David Keating, a critically acclaimed Irish feature film director, screenwriter, producer, and project mentor, on Wednesday October 5th in Castlebar.

Joined Up Screenwriting explores fundamental storytelling tools along with practical techniques for writing for the screen. Although screenwriting is a craft, it’s not all about story structure and formats. Like all writers and artists, screenwriters need to work from their own fascination and excitement — their own passion and curiosity. It can be challenging to balance this with the practical reality of the evolving conventions and guidelines of the screenplay – but this is what we do.

Joined up Screenwriting aims to demystify the technical demands of film and TV scripts while providing creative ways for screenwriters to get their ideas onto the page, and to complete and deliver a script draft.

Workshop content will include:

  • The new role of the screenplay (film and TV)
  • Theme, and how it feeds your work
  • Story structure made simple
  • Audience / reader engagement
  • Creating great characters — ways to harness motivation
  • How to use character tools as story tools
  • Subtext
  • The writer’s practice and the importance of being oneself.
  • Q&A / open discussion

Experienced screenwriters would benefit from the workshop by exploring new approaches to traditional concepts. New screenwriters will gain insights and practical tools that will help them through a draft.

Director and screenwriter, David’s writing includes work for Columbia/Sony Pictures and on Jim Sheridan’s script for Into the West.

David has directed three features films, The Last of the High Kings, with Jared Leto, Gabriel Byrne, and Christina Ricci; Wake Wood, with Aidan Gillen, Timothy Spall, and Eva Birthistle; and this year’s Cherry Tree, with Naomi Battrick, Anna Walton, and Sam Hazeldene. Cherry Tree was selected to open Film4 Frightfest last year.

As a trainer and project mentor David has worked with Oxford University’s Green Templeton College and Saïd Business School, Screen Training Ireland, the National Film School of Ireland, the Huston School of Film and Digital Media, the London Film Academy, Moonstone, Equinoxe, Media Development Morocco, and with Mira Nair’s Uganda initiative MAISHA.

With Story Campus he has been involved in training events in the UK with BAFTA, the East End Film Festival, and in Ireland for the Dublin International Film Festival
