Liam Neeson to lead South Korean film Operation Chromite

Northern Irish actor Liam Neeson has signed on to play General Douglas MacArthur in John H. Lee’s new South Korean action film Operation Chromite.

The title comes from the codename for the 1950 Battle of Inchon, a turning point in the Korean War that saw UN forces surprise the North Korean army by launching an amphibious assault on the largely undefended city of Inchon. MacArthur was the driving force behind the operation, overcoming the strong misgivings of more cautious generals to a risky assault over extremely unfavorable terrain.

Korean director John H. Lee, a.k.a. Lee Jae-han, will direct from a script by Lee Man-hee. Neeson is the only star confirmed as of yet, with production due to start later this year. Korean production company Taewon Entertainment is behind the film, which has an estimated $12m budget.

Operation Chromite is set to be released in time for next year’s anniversary of the breakout of the Korean War on June 25, 2016.
