Irish Abroad: Irish films, actors, and director nominated for 2015 Satellite Awards

The International Press Academy has unveiled the nominations for its 20th annual Satellite Awards, with nominees announced in 19 film categories and 13 TV categories. The Irish feature strongly, with Room and Brooklyn competing for Motion Picture, and Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) competing for Actress in a Motion Picture and Actor in a Motion Picture respectively. Room director, and Dublin native, Lenny Abrahamson is also nominated for Director.

In addition to Room and Brooklyn the ten Motion Picture nominees consists of The Big Short, Black Mass, Bridge of SpiesCarol, The Martian, The RevenantSicario and Spotlight. Fassbender faces strong competition from Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl; Johnny Depp, Black Mass; Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant; Matt Damon, The Martian; Tom Hardy, Legend; and Will Smith, Concussion if he is to win Actor in a Motion Picture. Ronan competes against Room actress Brie Larson, as well as Blythe Danner, I’ll See You in My Dreams; Carey Mulligan, Suffragette; Cate Blanchett, Carol; and Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years. In the Director category Abrahamson faces off against Tom Hooper – The Danish Girl; Thomas McCarthy – Spotlight; Steven Spielberg – Bridge of Spies; Ridley Scott – The Martian; and Alejandro González Iñárritu – The Revenant.

Spotlight has already been awarded an Ensemble: Motion Picture Award, with other special awards going to American Crime, Ensemble: TV; Amy Schumer for Trainwreck, an honorary Satellite for Breakthrough Comedian of the Year; and Jacob Tremblay for Room,for his Breakthrough Performance.

The International Press Academy is a global media association of domestic and foreign entertainment journalists in print, TV, radio, broadcast, and online outlets; including critics, interviewers, reviewers, bloggers, and photographers.  The presentation of the 20th Annual Satellite Awards will take place in Century City, California on February 21st, 2016.
