#IrishAbroad: The Killing of a A Sacred Deer opens at number 1 in US speciality box-office

Element Pictures’ production The Killing of a A Sacred Deer opens at number 1 in the speciality box office in the US this weekend, grossing an impressive $114K from just four theatres in New York and L.A.The Yorgos Lanthimos directed feature averaged $28,646 per screen beating off stiff competition with other newcomers to the market such as Todd Haynes Wonderstruck. The American distributor A24 plan to roll out the Cannes winning film into an additional twelve further cities next weekend ahead of a nationwide expansion November 3.

A24 also released Element Pictures/Yorgos Lanthimos’s  Oscar nominated The Lobster in the US where it grossed $9M.

We’re delighted that the film has opened so strongly in the US, following raves on the festival circuit it’s wonderful that it is now connecting with audiences is such a meaningful way.

The Killing of a A Sacred Deer sees Colin Farrell reunite with Lanthimos. Farrell stars as Steven, a charismatic surgeon forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart when the behaviour of a teenage boy he has taken under his wing takes a sinister turn. Nicole Kidman also stars as the wife of Farrell’s character, along with young, Irish actor Barry Keoghan (’71 and Dunkirk), Raffey Cassidy (Tomorrowland), Sunny Suljic (The Unspoken), Bill Camp (12 Years a Slave) and Alicia Silverstone (Clueless).

The Killing of a A Sacred Deer was produced by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe’s Element Pictures (The Lobster, Room, A Date for Mad Mary). Lanthimos and his regular collaborator, Efthymis Filippou, co-wrote the project, which was shot last Autumn in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The film is financed by Film4 and New Sparta Films along with the Irish Film Board. The project was developed by Element Pictures with support from Film4. HanWay Films is worldwide sales agent with A24 on board as US distributor.
