Bleecker Street has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to Sebastián Lelio’s Disobedience, based on the novel of the same name by Naomi Alderman, and is adapted by Lelio and Rebecca Lenkiewicz.
The film, which stars Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams, and Alessandro Nivola, follows young woman who returns to her Orthodox Jewish home after learning about the death of her estranged father. She causes an upheaval in the quiet community when she rekindles a repressed love with her best friend – a woman now married to her cousin.
Disobedience is produced by Ed Guiney for Dublin-based Element Pictures, Frida Torresblanco for Braven Films, and Rachel Weisz for HGS Productions. Disobedience is financed by Film 4 and Film Nation. It is an Element Pictures/ LC6 Productions / Braven Films production. This deal was negotiated between Kent Sanderson and Avy Eschenasy on behalf of Bleecker Street, WME Global, and FilmNation Entertainment.
Sebastian has captured, with real authenticity, the universality of love and faith, and the strength and sacrifice it takes to fight for what you believe in.

Disobedience will be released in Ireland and the UK by Curzon Artifical Eye and Element Pictures Distribution on May 4th, 2018.
