#IrishAbroad: A Mother Brings Her Son to Be Shot to compete for F:ACT award at CPH:DOX

Sinead O’Shea’s documentary A Mother Brings Her Son to Be Shot is set to have its international premiere at the prestigious CPH:DOX Film Festival next month, one of the largest documentary film festivals in Europe. In addition the film has been nominated for the F:ACT Award.

Director Sinead O’Shea spent five years bringing this documentary about paramilitary activity at a time of peace in Northern Ireland to the big screen. As the film’s extraordinary title suggests, it centres on a shocking real-life case in a Republican stronghold in Northern Ireland where a Derry mother cooperates with the intervention of dissident Republicans in controlling her teenage son, who has a serious drugs problem. The story that emerges is a fascinating and timely exploration of a post-conflict community.

A Mother Brings Her Son to Be Shot is produced by Ailish Bracken and Sinead O’Shea for Blinder Films, with co-producer Figs Jackman for Spring Films. Executive Producer are Joshua Oppenheimer, André Singer, and Katie Holly. The film was made with the support of the Irish Film Board.

F:ACT Award is dedicated to films in the field between documentary filmmaking and investigative journalism. This year, 10 films are nominated in this prestigious competition, consisting of four World Premieres, five International Premieres and one European Premiere.

The winner of F:ACT Award will be found by a jury and announced at CPH:DOX’s Award Ceremony on March 23 at Kunsthal Charlottenborg.

CPH:DOX is devoted to supporting independent and innovative film and to present contemporary non-fiction, art cinema and experimental film. The festival has been recognized for its sharp and daring programme profile with a special focus on exploring the hybrid field between documentary practice and various type of staging. The 2018 festival runs March 15th to 25th.

Parallel to the festival from March 19th to 24th runs CPH:INDUSTRY hosting the financing and co-production market CPH:FORUM, the work-in-progress section CPH:WIP, the new pitching event Science Film Forum, the 5-day conference in partnership with Documentary Campus CPH:CONFERENCE and the screening market CPH:MARKET.

A Mother Brings Her Son to Be Shot has its Irish premiere at the Audi Dublin International Film Festival on Saturday, 3rd March.
