A Date For Mad Mary is the winner of two Irish Film and Television Awards: Best Film and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Charleigh Bailey.
Additionally, the film has screened at over fifty film festivals in the United States and Canada including Outfest, Toronto Inside Out, Seattle International Film Festival, Frameline, Newport Beach Film Festival, Newfest and San Francisco Irish Film Festival. The film was selected as the Director’s Choice Feature at the Irish Film Festival Boston.
A Date For Mad Mary tells the story of “Mad” Mary McArdle (Seána Kerslake) returning to her small Irish home town after a short spell in prison- for something she’d rather forget. But everything and everyone seems different. Her best friend Charlene (Charleigh Bailey), is about to get married and Mary is maid of honor. When Charlene refuses Mary a “plus one” on the grounds that she probably couldn’t find a date, Mary becomes determined to prove her wrong. Her attempts at dating are a disaster and she winds up feeling more alone… until she meets Jess (Tara Lee), the lesbian wedding photographer and everything changes.
Critics have fallen for A Date For Mad Mary, with a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Jessica Kiang of Variety writes, “As funny, flawed and foulmouthed as its irresistible central character, “A Date For Mad Mary” makes an absolute show of itself, and it is wonderful.” Donald Clarke of The Irish Times gives A Date For Mad Mary four stars noting the film is, “a triumphant first feature from Darren Thornton.” It was the Scannain Irish Film of the Year in 2016.
