Festival favourite new Irish comedy The Guard has been unveiled as the official opening movie for the Edinburgh International Film Festival, commencing June 15th. This is fantastic news for the Element Pictures release which will have it’s Irish Premiere on July 6th at the Galway Film Fleadh.
The Guard is a thriller-comedy set on the west coast of Ireland where Sergeant Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson) is a small-town cop with a confrontational personality, a subversive sense of humour, a dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes, and absolutely no interest whatsoever in the international cocaine-smuggling ring that has brought FBI agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle)to his door.
Directed by John Michael McDonagh, The Guard has a strong cast, which includes Gleeson, Cheadle, Fionnuala Flanagan, Liam Cunningham and Mark Strong.
The Guard will be released nationwide on July 8th.
