Next 17th and 18th October, ISLA (Irish Spanish Latin American) Festival returns inspired by “Memory and Signs”, by poet Ángel Valente. In its 8th year, the festival welcomes artists from different countries and creative fields at Instituto Cervantes and other city venues.Filmmakers such as Spanish director Arantxa Aguirre, Mexican author and film director Iván Uriel or Colombian artistic director of “Virus Tropical” Powerpaola (an adaptation of her own graphic novel to the big screen) all will take part in the main festival events, that will include a panel discussion, interlinked interviews, two workshops (autofiction comic books and Cuban folk dances) and a multidisciplinary show about the musicality in Lorca’s works.
On its opening, ISLA will screen music documentary Love and Death. The Story of Enrique Granados at Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute (TBSI). The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with director Arantxa Aguirre and neuroscience professor and dancer Ana Belén López and chaired by Spanish professor and singer Katerina García. Admission is free and no booking is required.
Love and Death. The Story of Enrique Granados tells the intense and turbulent story of composer Enrique Granados in Barcelona at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, his journeys to Madrid, Paris, New York, his life-long struggles and his early successes. The screening will be in original version with English subtitles. Born in Madrid, its director Arantxa Aguirre has worked as assistant director of Mario Camus, Almodóvar, Basilio Martín Patino or Carlos Saura. Her documentary films include the award-winning El esfuerzo y el ánimo (2010), American Swan in Paris (2011) and Dancing Beethoven (2016) -also nominated to Goya, Forqué and Platino Awards-, all of them released in theaters in several countries. Love and Death. The story of Enrique Granados is her most recent work.
