The Audi Dublin International Film Festival will go on regional tour throughout Ireland, bringing the perfect film to mark 100 years since Irish women got the vote to five additional locations. Special screenings of Petra Volpe’s The Divine Order will take place in Dún Laoghaire, Drogheda, Sligo, Newbridge and Navan in association with access>CINEMA and with the support of the Arts Council.
The Divine Order is a heart-warming and funny drama about the fight for voting rights for women in Switzerland in 1971. It follows unassuming housewife Nora who makes a stand for change in a quiet Swiss village and comes up against some resistance. It’s a timely, character-driven story that shows the political is always personal.
Newport Gun Girls, Lauren Orme’s animated short about women who worked at a gun-producing factory in Wales during WWII, will screen before The Divine Order in each location as part of this special Festival event.
The Divine Order won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Film at the Tribeca Film Festival 2017 and also won the Festival Award for Best Global Cinema at the San Diego International Film Festival.
Other festival highlights in Dublin include Oscar-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave, makes her directorial debut with Sea Sorrow, a documentary about the refugee crisis, and comes to Dublin to receive the Volta Award, the festival’s most prestigious award. Also receiving the Volta Award is screenwriter and director Paul Schrader who is this year’s guest curator. Schrader will give a Public Talk, introduce three films that influenced his work and attend a screening of his new film First Reformed. ADIFF have also partnered with the San Francisco Silent Film Festival this year to screen two restorations of silent films, The Italian Straw Hat and Behind The Door, with live musical accompaniments.
