The nominees have been announced for the 2018 Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) Film and Drama Awards, which will be held on Thursday, February 15th 2018.
Competing for the big award of Best Feature Film are Aisling Walsh’s Maudie (which topped the list with 6 nominations including Best Director), Mark O’Connor’s Cardboard Gangsters (which received 5 nominations including Best Director),John Butler’s Handsome Devil (which also received 5 nominations including Best Director and Screenwriter), Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of a Sacred Deer (which received 4 nominations), Frank Berry’s Michael Inside (which also received 4 nominations including Best Director and Screenwriter), and Pat Collins’ Song of Granite (which picked up 3 nominations in the technical categories).
Also cleaning up in the technical categories was Emer Reynold’s space-documentary The Farthest, which nabbed 5 nominations. It will compete for the George Morrison Feature Documentary award with The 34th, A Cambodian Spring, No Stone Unturned, and The Silver Branch.
The most notable nominations were in the Best Actress in a Leading Role – Film category, where there are only three nominees – Sarah Bolger for Halal Daddy, Saoirse Ronan for Lady Bird, and Ann Skelly for Kissing Candice. In 2011 a similar event occurred which caused the Leading Actress categories for Film and Television to be combined. However in recent years there has been a notable increase in lead roles for women and an emphasis on female creatives within the industry. We hope that this is just a one-time anomaly.
