Judge Dredd is set to return to the big screen and this time (thankfully) Sylvester Stallone is nowhere to be seen. Pete Travis, director of the not entirely awful Vantage Point, is set to direct the $50 million comic-book adaptation for Andrew MacDonald’s DNA Films.
That’s right $50 million, that’s half the budget of the Stallone movie and it was a crock of… Oh and it’s going to be in 3D too! Heaven knows where the actual money is going to be spent but I’m guessing that the visual effects might be a tad on the weak side.
On the plus side they have nabbed a decent writer with 28 Days Later scribe Alex Garland penning the script. Garland is promising a return to the roots of what made Judge Dredd such a success in the comic world, good old pulp fiction and psychotic weirdness.
It will be interesting to see who fills the boots of the good Judge with my guess being it’ll be someone relatively unknown. Much as I’d love to see Bruce Campbell toting a shotgun on the back of a huge motorbike I fear he may just be too old for the part.
