Finally, after years of badgering, the Irish Film Institute are going to screen Paul Thomas Anderson’s brilliant (and divisive) film The Master in glorious 70mm. It will screen for one night only, on May 7th at 5:30pm.
WWII veteran Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix, in a remarkable performance as a man floundering and visibly uncomfortable in his own skin) drifts from job to job, unable to adjust to life in peacetime, seeking comfort in alcohol, before connecting with Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), leader of quasi-religious movement ‘The Cause’.
The film was partly inspired by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, and was was shot almost entirely on 65 mm film stock, making it the first feature length fiction film to be shot and released in 70 mm since Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet in 1996.
We here at Scannain believe The Master to one of the best, if not the best, films of this century. Book tickets now and we will see you there!
