John Crowley’s immigration drama Brooklyn has posted the biggest opening for an Irish film at the Irish box-office of 2015. The film opened with €605,410 from 87 sites north and south of the border, while taking third spot in the combined UK and Irish box-office with £1.04m.
The opening figure as officially measured in British pounds (£432,000) sees Brooklyn take the number 3 spot at the all-time Irish film openers in Ireland. By the converted EUR rate (using historical FX rates) it comes in fourth. Last year Mrs. Brown’s Boys D’Movie set a new record for €1.02m, so Brooklyn is still some way behind that. Opening on 87 screens resulted in making this screen count the largest ever in Ireland for an Irish film.
Brooklyn is an adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s best-selling novel by the equally best-selling British author Nick Hornby. Set in the 1950s, the film sees a young woman move from a small town in Ireland to Brooklyn, where she has the opportunity for work, for a future and for love.
Intermission director Crowley gathered an all-star Irish and British cast, that features Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen, Jim Broadbent, and Julie Walters. Brooklyn is an Irish/British co-production from Wildgaze Films, Finola Dwyer Productions, Parallel Films and Item 7, with co-finance from Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board.
Congratulations to all those involved in the making of Brooklyn. The Irish Film Board worked on Brooklyn with Irish executive producer Alan Moloney of Parallel Films and producers Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey. We are very happy to be working again with John Crowley, who directed the hugely successful IFB funded feature film, Intermission.
