Variety is reporting that Irish actress Saoirse Ronan has signed on to star in Michael Mayer’s The Seagull.
The film, which is an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s play of the same name, follows the romantic and artistic conflicts of writer Boris Trigorin, the endearingly innocent Nina, the fading actress Irina Arkadina, and her son the playwright Konstantin Tréplev.
Carlow native Ronan will play Nina, with Annette Bening cast as Irina. Corey Stoll and newcomer Billy Howle take the other lead roles. Playwright Stephen Karam is adapting the script for Tony award winner Mayer.
The Seagull announcement comes from the Cannes Film Festival, where Oliver Simon and Daniel Baur’s K5 International are selling the film.
