The European Film Academy has announced its list of nominees for the 2014 European Film Awards. Ireland’s Brendan Gleeson has been nominated for his wonderful leading role in John Michael McDonagh’s Calvary.
Gleeson’s nomination is the only Irish selection in a list that is lead by Pawel Pawlikowski’s Ida, with five. It is followed closely by Leviathan, from Russian filmmaker Andrei Zvyagintsev, which won at Cannes earlier this year. Eoin Duffy’s award-winning animated short The Missing Scarf had previously been nominated for an award in the category of Best Short Film, which is chosen by festivals rather than the academy.
Lars von Trier’s provocative Nymphomaniac Director’s Cut Volume I & II, Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Palme d’Or winner Winter Sleep, and Steven Knight’s excellent drama Locke all received three nominations apiece.
The awards for the technical categories have already been decided, but the rest will handed out on December 13th.
