The new Sony Pictures film Sex Tape is out in cinemas today, September 3rd. The film sees Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel team up as husband and wife who attempt to hunt down their private video that has accidentally been synced to all their friends and families’ iPads.
This is not the first time we’ve seen the pair together in a film, having previously starred opposite each other back in 2011, in Bad Teacher. The pair have a very easy screen chemistry and so that got us thinking about what other pairings worked on the big screen.
Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall
It is impossible to have a list of on-screen chemistry without these two icons of the screen. Bogey and Bacall first met on the set of Howard Hawk’s 1944 film To Have and Have Not when Bacall was 19 and Bogart was 44. The pair had an instant chemistry that would lead to Bogart to divorce his and marry the young starlet a year later. As husband and wife the pair would light up the screen in 3 further movies, including the superb Raymond Chandler adaptation The Big Sleep.
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio
A 90s classic couple, Kate and Leo were the star-crossed lovers aboard the ill-fated Titanic. Despite her being a seventeen-year old aristocrat, and he, a poor artist, they put their class differences (and her engagement )aside to embark on a secret affair. The classic “I’m the king of the world” pose can be attributed to this pair, who starred together again a decade later in Revolutionary Road.
Woody & Buzz
The only animated pair to make the list, the cowboy and space ranger are a prime example of how enemies can become friends. As an audience, we’re torn between lonely and rejected Woody and self-assured but misinformed Buzz, but luckily the two realise they’re a powerhouse together so we don’t have to pick a favourite. Of course, we cannot discuss the chemistry between the two without directly attributing to the fantastic Tom Hanks and Tim Allen.
Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton
Originally brought together by the epic Cleopatra in 1963, the original Hollywood couple went on to star in 12 films together, including Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Their relationship was turbulent, both on and off-screen, but their on-screen chemistry was undeniable.
Susan Sarandon & Geena Davis
Almost certainly the most famous and iconic female partnership on the big screen, these two as Thelma and Louise paved the way for strong women friendships in film and proved that there doesn’t always have to be a leading man. Thelma and Louise were thick as thieves and remained inseparable until their ill-fated finale.
