Author: The JT Leroy Story

#Event: IFI welcomes novelist Laura Albert for Author: The JT Leroy Story Q&A on August 24th

Laura Albert, the woman behind JT LeRoy, modern literature’s most scandalous revelation, will attend the Irish Film Institute on Thursday, August 24th at 20.00 for a special screening of Jeff Feuerzeig’s 2016 documentary Author: The JT LeRoy Story, followed by a Q&A with actress Paula Malcomson (The Hunger Games).

Author: The JT LeRoy Story presents an immersive account that delves deeply into Laura Albert’s story. Director Jeff Feuerzeig has commented that, in all the coverage about JT LeRoy, “one voice was glaringly missing, that of Laura Albert.” Here, her voice comes through with unforgettable clarity.

LeRoy burst onto the literary scene at the end of the 1990s, a bracingly authentic new voice whose lurid tales of street hustlers and child abuse were drawn from his own experiences of abandonment, abuse and institutionalisation. The film explores Albert’s desire to experiment with identity and gender, which led to the writings of JT LeRoy, and chronicles LeRoy’s rapid rise to fame, and the necessity of producing an alternate persona. The documentary also examines the celebrity interest in LeRoy, with accounts from Billy Corgan, Courtney Love and Asia Argento, amongst others.

Tickets for the screening of Author: the JT LeRoy Story + Q&A are now on sale from www.ifi.ie and the IFI Box Office – 01-6793477.
