Irish Box Office – Mrs. Brown's Boys D’Movie off to record start

We’ve a new queen at the Irish Box Office as Mrs. Brown’s Boys D’Movie has taken a record breaking €1.02m at the Irish box office after its first 3 days on release, representing 19.2% of the UK and Irish Box Office total.

The film’s opening of €1.02m is the biggest opener at the 2014 Irish box office to date, and is the 3rd Highest All-time Comedy Opening in Ireland after The Hangover 2 (€1.19m) and Ted (€1.11m), and ahead of The Inbetweeners (€846k), Bridget Jones 2 (€904k) and Hancock (€911k).

The film also takes the crown for the biggest opening of all time for a local film. A chart which now stands as below:

The all-time record for an Irish film at the Irish box-office is Michael Collins, which took £4.1m in 1996. Avatar holds the over-all record with box-office office earnings for the Republic and Northern Ireland of €9,747,390, followed by Titanic at €9,581,702 and Mamma Mia! with €8,053,287. At the pace it’s going Mrs. Brown’s Boys D’Movie could easily eclipse Michael Collins and take a fair stab at making the top 3.

Commenting on the opening weekend figures, Dave Burke, General Manager of Universal Pictures International Ireland said, “We are thrilled that Irish cinemagoers have embraced the phenomenon that is Agnes Brown and made her Queen of the Box Office. The results are truly spectacular.”

Mrs. Brown’s Boys D’Movie has also dominated the UK market and is the #1 movie in the UK & Ireland, taking an overall £4.27 million in its opening weekend.

When market-trader Agnes Brown finds her stall under threat from a ruthless developer, she and her family embark on a campaign to save their livelihood, aided only by a motley troop comprising Buster’s blind trainee ninjas, a barrister with an unhelpful affliction, and Grandad’s elderly friends. As daughter Cathy turns her back on the family business and unwanted secrets emerge from Agnes’s past, could the Brown matriarch finally be out of her depth?
