Galway Picture Palace to receive completion funding

picture-palace_imageGalway’s new arthouse cinema, the Picture Palace, has been allocated €735,000 for the completion of the cinema, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys, announced this morning.

The new building, which is led by film-maker Lelia Doolan, is designed by architect Tom de Paor, with a window by the late Patrick Scott. Situated close to the Galway City Museum and Spanish Arch, the venue will include a three-screen cinema, a cafe, and bookshop.

The cinema will form a key part of Galway’s UNESCO City of Film status, and play its part in Galway’s bid for European City of Culture 2020.
This will come as a significant boost to Galway, which of course is one of this country’s main cultural hubs. The State has already invested considerably in the Picture Palace project, so I am very pleased that its future has been secured. When completed, the Picture Palace will be a state-of-the-art three screen cinema, complete with a cafe and book shop. Located close to the historic Spanish Arch and just a stone’s throw from the Mick Lally Theatre (Druid), the Picture Palace will be a great addition to Galway’s vibrant cultural scene.
